Court & Relationships

No queen rules alone. The eight relationships at the heart of her court — counselors, household, and the realm itself.

In-world fiction. Every person on this page was invented by this site's authors. They are not app canon, not historical figures, and not real people.

Chamberlain Ambrose

The keeper of protocol. White-bearded, bespectacled, and exact about everything except the queen’s moods, which he reads flawlessly. He has served three queens (in the fiction) and says the current one is “the first who asks me what I think.”

Gardener Poppy

The keeper of the garden — and of perspective. Plump, muddy-booted, unimpressed by crowns. In the fiction, she is the only person alive who has told the queen her roses were “adequate,” and the queen quotes it annually.

Astronomer Liora

The keeper of the stars. Young, brilliant, always slightly late because she was watching the sky. She charts the realm’s fortunes by the stars and the queen’s by her face; in the fiction, her star-charts hang in the council chamber beside the realm map.

Treasurer Bramble

The keeper of the coin. Stout, ledger-bound, allergic to waste. He and the queen share a ritual, in the fiction: every decree with a cost is read aloud to him twice — once for the realm, once for the treasury.

Captain Sir Rowan

The keeper of the guard. A knight of old-fashioned courtesy and new-fashioned competence. In the fiction, he commands the palace guard and the queen’s personal safety, and loses at chess to her every Midwinter — on purpose, everyone suspects, except him.

The Realm Itself

The eighth counselor. In the fiction, the queen treats the realm as a relationship, not a possession. The open audiences, the Balcony Wave, the Lantern Nights — all are courtship, of a kind: the daily renewal of a promise between a queen and her people.

The Other Worlds

Envoys from the other Vizlings worlds arrive regularly, and the queen receives each with full ceremony — see Diplomacy with Other Worlds. In the fiction, she keeps a guest book of every envoy ever received, and can recite from it.

The Reader

You. In the fiction’s framing, the reader of this site is an honored guest of the court — the audiences are open, the garden has a visitor’s path, and the queen, they say, always has time for one more question.
