Scene Guide: Story Night
Front-row seat at Uncle Penne's lantern tales.
The setup
Dusk in the Durum Hills. Uncle Penne's lantern glows; the kids of Little Italy settle in a circle. Ricky is always front and center, field journal open, pencil ready — the only audience member taking notes.
How the scene plays
Beat 1 — The arrival: Ricky sprints up the hill, backpack bouncing, and slides into his spot: "Did I miss anything?" Penne: "Only the beginning of everything." Ricky opens the journal. He's ready.
Beat 2 — The tale: Tonight: the Lost Recipe. Penne describes the water-stained clue; Ricky's pencil flies. When Penne reaches the part about "where the compass spins," Ricky whispers to Pippa: "That's the hillside cellar. I know it." Pippa whispers back: "It's three cellars."
Beat 3 — The question: Every story night ends with questions, and Ricky always asks the best one. Tonight: "If the recipe makes everyone friends — why hide it?" Penne goes quiet. Then, softly: "Maybe... it was never hidden, kid. Maybe we're supposed to find it together." The circle goes still. Even the lantern seems to listen.
Beat 4 — The button: Walking home under the stars, Ricky writes in his journal: "Expedition goal updated: find the Lost Recipe WITH everyone." He underlines "with" three times.
