Scene Guide: The Pantry Expedition
Age 7. Forty minutes. One legend born.
The setup
The family pantry, Little Italy. To an adult: shelves of jars. To seven-year-old Ricky: uncharted territory. He stands before it in a too-big backpack, cap on forwards, map in hand.
How the scene plays
Beat 1 — The briefing: Ricky narrates to his stuffed toy (a plush meatball named Captain): "Day one. The White Desert looms." He salutes. Captain salutes back (Ricky moves Captain's arm).
Beat 2 — The expedition: A wordless montage: squeezing behind the flour bin, "discovering" the pickle jars ("THE GREEN CANYON!"), taking field notes in crayon. His map gains sea monsters. Obviously.
Beat 3 — The rescue: Nonna finds him, flour in his hair, mid-discovery. She does not scold. She asks for the report. He gives it, with sound effects. She frames the map.
Beat 4 — The button: That night at dinner, Nonna hangs the crayon map in the kitchen. "My explorer," she says. Ricky beams. The map still hangs there today — the first artifact of a career.
