AI & Open Source

The third great pivot — after desktop-to-mobile and the metaverse bet, Zuckerberg went all-in on AI, and on giving the models away.

The pivot

Through 2023, Meta transformed from a metaverse-bet company into one of the most aggressive AI builders in the world: massive GPU clusters, a new AI research posture, and AI assistants folded into Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. For Zuckerberg it was the familiar playbook — spot the platform shift, concentrate the company, ship — applied a third time.

Llama

The centerpiece is Llama, Meta’s family of large language models, released with open weights starting in 2023 (Llama 2) and continuing through subsequent generations. Anyone can download, modify, and deploy them — a sharp contrast with the closed models of OpenAI and Google.

The open-source argument

In a July 2024 open letter, “Open Source AI Is the Path Forward,” Zuckerberg argued that open models will be safer and more innovative because scrutiny and competition improve them — drawing an explicit parallel to how open-source Linux came to dominate servers. Critics counter that open weights also diffuse capabilities to bad actors; supporters counter that closed models concentrate power in a few companies. The debate is live and unresolved.

The infrastructure bet

Meta has committed tens of billions to AI infrastructure — data centers and custom silicon — on the thesis that AI features will define the next decade of its apps, from feed ranking to the Meta AI assistant to future AR glasses. Whether the spending earns its return is the central financial question of the company’s late-2020s.

Why it fits the pattern

Each of Zuckerberg’s era-defining moves follows the same shape: the current platform’s owner charges rent, so build the next platform yourself. Open-source AI is the cheapest way to make sure no single lab owns the intelligence layer — and, not incidentally, it makes Meta’s distribution (3 billion daily users) the most valuable asset in the AI race.
