Allies & Rivals
The valley is full of friends — and one very grumpy cactus. The people (and plants, and animals) around Rosie Bloom. Fan-written fiction.
Allies
Bramble the hedgehog
Rosie’s closest friend. A small, perpetually rumpled hedgehog with strong opinions about moonpetals (delicious) and thunderstorms (terrifying). Met Rosie when she pulled a thorn from his paw instead of scolding him for eating the prize flowers. Follows her everywhere; pretends it’s a coincidence. Grumbles constantly, loves completely.
Moss the tortoise
The valley’s slowest resident and Rosie’s reading companion. Moss dozes through most events and wakes up with exactly the right observation, delivered three days late. Carries seedlings on his shell “for safekeeping.” Has never once been in a hurry, including during the Great Drought, which Rosie found oddly comforting.
Dewdrop the rain sprite
A small, bright sprite who lives in the Dewdrop Pond’s mist. Appears when it rains, vanishes when it doesn’t, and takes the drought personally — she blamed herself for the dry summer until Rosie talked her out of it. Teaches Rosie rain-songs; Rosie teaches her patience.
The Old Oak
The ancient tree at the valley’s heart and its oldest resident. Speaks so slowly that a single sentence can take an afternoon. Opened its trunk-library to Rosie and no one else. Gives advice that sounds like riddles and turns out to be instructions.
The fireflies
Not one ally but hundreds — the valley’s messengers. They learned Sporelight patterns from Rosie (or taught them to her) and now spell out announcements, birthday wishes, and the occasional gossip in light over the meadow at dusk.
Rivals (the friendly kind)
Prickle the cactus
A grumpy barrel cactus who claimed a sunny boulder as a sovereign nation and defends its border with glares. Prickle insists Rosie’s watering schedule is “oppressive,” her singing is “noise pollution,” and her kindness is “suspicious.” Secretly accepts a cup of Dewdrop Brew every winter and has never once thanked her out loud. The valley’s favorite not-quite-enemy.
The Weeds (collective)
Not evil — just ambitious. Crabgrass, bindweed, and one particularly determined dandelion named Colonel Fluff, who believe the meadow should be “for everyone” (meaning: them). Rosie negotiates borders with them every spring like a tiny diplomat. She usually wins by being nicer than they can handle.
