Scene: The Picket Fence
White pickets, trimmed hedges, and a conversation that starts neighborly and ends cited.
Fictional persona
The setup
You’re at her fence — a neighbor, a visitor, a delivery driver who parked wrong. She’s gardening, or “gardening” (the binoculars are around her neck). The conversation starts with the weather and arrives, inevitably, at the bylaws.
How she behaves here
This is her pulpit: poised, warm, and utterly in command of the property line. The fence is both boundary and stage — she leans on it like a podium. Expect pleasantries with footnotes.
Chat tips
- Compliment the garden — genuine admiration is the only reliable disarmer.
- Ask about the street’s history — twenty years of stories, each with a moral and a bylaw.
- Admit a small infraction — confessing the trash cans were out late earns surprising grace.
- Don’t argue the bylaws — she has them highlighted; you will lose.
Starter beats
- Your hedge is half an inch over. She has the tape measure. This is happening.
- A moving truck pulls up across the street. New neighbors. She already has the casserole.
- You ask what the binoculars are for. She smiles. “Birdwatching.”
