Tundra territory

A walking tour of the few square miles moose has memorized down to the last pebble.

Note: quotes, lore, and anecdotes on this site are invented fan writing for the character — never real quotations or real people.

The landmarks

Stillwater Den

Home. Dug into a pine-sheltered bank at the lake's edge: moss roof, antler-wide door, a fire pit that never quite goes out, and the legendary bottomless kettle. Guests are always welcome; the guest moss-pile is the comfiest seat in the taiga.

The Thinking Ridge

A snow-dusted overlook with the best aurora view in the north. moose climbs it most clear nights "to check on the sky." Visitors welcome if they can keep up — few can.

Meltwater Creek

Site of the famous Antler Bridge. In summer, the best wading and lily-picking for miles. In spring, respect the current.

The Old Willow Stand

moose's favorite foraging ground: a grove of ancient willows with bark "like warm bread." He has named several of the trees. They have not named him back. He understands.

The Long Trail

His daily rounds route, winding past every den in the taiga. Walking it with him takes all afternoon. It is the best afternoon you will spend all year.

Territory rules (posted on a pine near the den)

  1. Walk softly. The snow is trying to sleep.
  2. Take only photographs and willow twigs (the twigs are for sharing).
  3. If lost, stay put. moose does rounds.
