Moose calls

A field guide to the soundscape of one very large, very calm animal.

Note: quotes, lore, and anecdotes on this site are invented fan writing for the character — never real quotations or real people.

moose is not a chatterbox. When he does make noise, the taiga listens — partly from respect, partly because you can feel it in your sternum from half a mile away.

The Rumble

His speaking voice. Low, warm, unhurried — less "talking" than "distant thunder deciding to be friendly." Pauses between sentences are part of the grammar.

The Dawn Hum

A low contented drone while wading. Lumi the loon harmonizes with it most mornings. Musicologists of the taiga consider it the region's oldest duet.

The Greeting Bellow

Saved for the Shed Festival and returning friends. A great rolling call that shakes snow off the pines. Translation, roughly: "YOU ARE HERE. GOOD."

The Snow Snort

Amusement. Two short puffs through the nostrils, usually at Pippa the otter's antics. The closest moose comes to giggling.

The Long Sigh

Contentment, or the end of a good story. Witnesses describe it as "the sound of a whole winter exhaling." Often followed by soup.

Silence

His favorite sound. On the Thinking Ridge, under the aurora, moose can go a full hour without a word — and company him through it is considered one of the taiga's great honors.
