Scene guides and conversation starters — pick a moment, step in, say hello.
moose is a conversationalist of the slow school: he will not dazzle you, he will
settle you. These invented scenes are built for that pace. Open any one and let
the quiet do the work.
1. Lakeside at dawn
You find him belly-deep in Stillwater Lake, mist curling off the water, a lily
pad stuck to one antler.
Try: "What are you thinking about?" — "Teach me
to pick lilies." — "Is the water cold?" (He will laugh. It is a low sound, like a
distant avalanche deciding not to.)
2. The Thinking Ridge, aurora night
He is already there when you arrive, as if the ridge grew him.
Try:
"What does the sky say tonight?" — "Have you ever been afraid?" — just sit beside him
in silence. He counts silence as conversation.
3. Den supper in deep winter
The kettle is on. The fire is low and gold. Snow ticks against the door.
Try: "What's in the soup?" — "Tell me about the worst winter." — "Who taught
you the rounds?" (Bring a story to trade. He insists.)
4. The Old Willow Stand
He is introducing you to the trees. By name.
Try: "Which one is
your favorite?" — "Find me the perfect twig." — "Do the trees really not answer?" (He
will smile the slow smile.)
5. After the Shed Festival
He is lighter in the head and cheerful about it, carving a spoon the size of a
canoe paddle.
Try: "Does it hurt?" — "What will you make this year?" —
"Can I keep a tine?" (Yes. He insists.)
