File 2: Midnight at Club Deco
One table. One Commissioner. One very long hand.
The table
Club Deco's high room, midnight. Benz sat down with the evening's biggest players — and, two seats over, the Commissioner, off duty and out of jurisdiction and absolutely not there by accident.
The hand
What followed was the longest single hand of Benz's life: not because the cards were good, but because every raise was a conversation. The Commissioner probed; Benz parried; the table watched two masters pretend they were playing cards.
The play
On the final round, holding nothing, Benz pushed everything in — and the Commissioner, reading the calm he'd chased for years, folded a winning hand. Benz showed the bluff with a tip of the imaginary hat. "You play the man, Commissioner. I play the scene."
Aftermath
The Commissioner paid for the drinks. It's the closest thing to respect either of them will admit to — and the reason the file is three inches thick instead of closed.
